Frequently Asked Questions
Is your pasta organic?
Our pasta is made with durum wheat grown in the Wairarapa using regenerative farming methods that focus on soil health, biodiversity and minimal intervention. The grain is not certified organic, but it is grown to an exceptionally clean standard with the same intent and care.
Is your pasta gluten-free?
Our pasta is made from durum wheat and does contain gluten hence is not suitable for coeliacs. Some customers who usually find pasta hard to digest have told us they experience ours as lighter and easier to digest, but individual responses will vary.
What does “bronze-cut” mean?
The dough is extruded through traditional bronze dies rather than modern Teflon plates. Bronze creates a gently rough surface that helps sauce cling better and gives the pasta a more rustic texture and flavour.
What is durum wheat?
Durum is a traditional hard wheat long used for pasta making. Its natural protein structure gives pasta its characteristic bite and golden colour without any additives. Ours is an ancient variety.
What ingredients are in your pasta?
Just two: New Zealand-grown durum wheat and water.
What is the shelf life?
Two years from the production date when stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Is your pasta vegan?
Yes, only flour and water are used.
Why does shipping cost so much?
Courier costs in New Zealand have increased significantly.
Because we’re still a small business based in the Wairarapa, we’re currently limited to standard courier rates. Sending a parcel to the South Island typically costs us around $20–$22, and rural deliveries can be significantly more; at times it has been closer to $35.
Many larger online businesses absorb these costs by building shipping into the product price so it appears as “free shipping” at checkout. At our scale that isn’t something we can do yet without increasing the price of the pasta itself, which would mean charging more for everyone - including customers buying small quantities or shopping locally. We’re also mindful of keeping our online prices aligned with our retail stockists.
It’s a balancing act we’re actively reviewing as we grow. As volumes increase we hope to negotiate better freight options and offer more competitive shipping, particularly for repeat or subscription orders.
Can I buy your pasta in shops as well as online?
Yes. Monty & Sons is stocked in selected specialty food stores around the country and is also available through our website. Visit our Stockists page to find your nearest store.
